LCHF for Hypertension

Always consult your healthcare provider before making dietary changes, especially if you are on medication for diabetes, hypertension, or any other condition. LCHF eating can significantly reduce medication requirements — your doctor needs to know.
LCHF for Hypertension
Nearly one in three South African adults has hypertension — and the majority don't know it. High blood pressure is a major driver of heart attack, stroke, and kidney failure, and conventional management relies heavily on long-term medication. LCHF offers a dietary path that addresses several of hypertension's underlying drivers.
Insulin, carbohydrates, and blood pressure
High insulin levels — driven by a high carbohydrate diet — cause the kidneys to retain sodium and water, which raises blood volume and therefore blood pressure. Insulin also stimulates the sympathetic nervous system, further raising vascular tension. By lowering carbohydrate intake and reducing insulin levels, LCHF addresses this mechanism directly.
Many people following LCHF see meaningful blood pressure reductions within weeks — often alongside reductions in antihypertensive medication. Again, this must be managed with your doctor.
On sodium: LCHF practitioners generally do not advise restricting sodium on a low carb diet — in fact, many recommend adequate salt intake, as carbohydrate restriction causes the kidneys to excrete more sodium. The relationship between salt and blood pressure is more nuanced than conventional guidelines suggest. Discuss with your healthcare provider.
The vascular layer
Hypertension damages arterial walls and reduces vascular elasticity over time. BEMER Physical Vascular Therapy works at the microcirculatory level — supporting the health and function of the smallest blood vessels, complementing the blood pressure improvements that LCHF provides at the metabolic level.
